Oolong Tea History
Oolong tea is a semi-oxidised tea more akin to green tea than to black tea and has a pungent, lingering taste because of it's 10% - 70% oxidation. The original Chinese name for Oolong Tea means "black dragon tea", a reference to the black, curly look of the leaves when processed.
The origins of the Oolong tea appear to be from the Wuyi Mountain region of China and as with most Chinese teas there are numerous songs, poems and legends surrounding the tea blend. One such tale tells of how one tea picker called Wu Liang accidentally discovered how to make Oolong tea whilst he was distracted by a deer - the tea leaves had already started to oxidise and when drunk gave off a very pungent flavour.
